“Music has the power to move a person between different realities: from a broken body into a soaring spirit, from a broken heart into the connection of shared love, from death into the memory and movement of life.”
Dr. Deforia Lane
Today, 50 years ago, a group of brave Americans set out on what they called the “Freedom Rides” in hopes to end segregation in America, especially in the Deep South. Men and women of all races and religious backgrounds courageously challenged the status quo and challenged an America that supported and enforced segregation laws. Through their journey, these individuals faced adversity—yet were willing to die than live in such a hateful world—where the basis of your humanity was judged on the color of your skin. America was forever changed because of their courageous actions—because of what they believed in.
I just finished watching today’s Oprah Show that commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Riders. I know, I know, why am I studying Oprah when I should be studying for finals—however; watching this show opened my eyes to the world that I—that we—live in at this moment. Often are we too busy worrying about senseless things—I feel we have forgotten how to just be humans. Our busy lives and our focus on material things have made us forget how to be in touch with one another on the basis of human instinct. When is the last time that you have felt complete and utter joy? Not to many of us can answer that question truthfully.
Everyday, I see courageous acts like those taken 50 years ago. Right now, as we are studying for finals in packed libraries and warm cozy apartments, there are Berkeley students on a hunger strike fighting so that the histories of many of us continue to be taught on our campuses. However, we are too busy to see how courageous their acts and the strength it takes to stand up for something bigger than yourself—for something that you may not see change in, but are willing to risk it all for it.
The bravery that the Freedom Riders had—and the courage it took for them to risk their lives for the betterment of others is a prime example of how extraordinary individuals can come together and change the lives of many in their future. America is filled with individuals who are fighting for a better world—yet we are blinded and cannot see them.
Excuse my graphic language, but wake the fuck up. Ask yourselves what’s wrong with the world, and what can you do to fix it.
Happy studying and good luck on finals
(thanks o for the insight)
